An Israeli soldier was stabbed and moderately injured in the Etzion settlement bloc in the West Bank on Tuesday night by two assailants.

The two attackers stabbed the soldier, 19, in his head before other soldiers stationed in the area shot them. Both assailants were killed, according to an Israel Police spokesman.

The stabbing took place as soldiers approached two suspicious-looking Arab men at a bus stop, an IDF spokeswoman told The Times of Israel.

As they got closer, the two Palestinian men attacked one of the soldiers, stabbing the 19-year-old soldier in the head and moderately wounding him.

“The forces responded to the immediate threat with fire towards the attackers,” the IDF said in a statement.

The injured Israeli man was evacuated to Jerusalem for medical treatment and listed in moderate condition.

The army was searching the area to ensure there were no other attackers, according to Channel 2. The attack took place at the Etzion Junction, which has been the scene of several attacks in the past two weeks.

“When we arrived there we saw a 19-year-old male who was fully conscious. He was walking and was treated by the IDF medics at the scene,” Magen David Adom medic Jabar Azzat said.

Azzat said the soldier sustained a head injury and was taken to Jerusalem’s Shaare Zedek hospital.

The heavily guarded junction, on the main West Bank artery of Route 60 and near several settlements and Palestinian towns, is usually crowded with hitchhikers and people waiting for buses.

The stabbing attack is the latest in a spate of incidents, including knife attacks and vehicular assaults, to rock the southern West Bank in the last several days.

An Israeli soldier was stabbed and seriously injured in an attack near the West Bank city of Hebron Monday morning. The attacker was shot and killed by other troops as he carried out the knife attack near the entrance to the Palestinian village of Beit Anun, north of Hebron, the IDF said.

On Sunday, a woman attempted to stab soldiers at a checkpoint in Hebron, and was shot and killed by troops at the scene, the army said. There were no injuries in that attack. Earlier in the day, a man was stabbed by assailants after his car was stoned on a road east of the Etzion bloc.

Last week, a man plowed his car into a bus stop at the junction, injuring two people. There have also been a number of attempted stabbing attacks there.
