One-year-old car crash survivor remains unclaimed in hospital

A one-year-old Infant, the lone survivor of an accident that killed three people Sunday night, remained alone and unclaimed at Rambam Hospital on Monday morning, as his relatives had yet to be located.

The three fatalities, a man, a woman and a 5-year-old child, were killed when a tractor driver allegedly ignored a right-of-way sign on Route 65, near Megiddo, and crashed into their jeep.

Police suspect the tractor driver didn’t give the oncoming car its right of way, and he was arrested overnight Sunday on suspicion of negligent homicide after receiving medical treatment for his wounds.

On Monday, the Nazareth Magistrate’s Court said the driver was Saif Saidi, 22, of Umm al-Ghanim, and remanded him for a further three days.

The infant suffered a head injury in the collision and was rushed by helicopter to the Haifa hospital for treatment. Despite his minor wounds, the baby was kept in the intensive care unit overnight as no one had come forth to claim him.

While the casualties were members of the same family, the injured infant was not a family member. Social workers and hospital staff examined possible courses of action, since — to date — they had not identified the infant.
