Police pin cell phone theft hike on migrants

Report shows 93 percent rise in number of stolen cell phones

An Israeli police report showed a 93 percent increase in the number of cellular phones stolen during 2012 over the previous year, citing African migrants as a major contributing factor.

According to the police report, obtained by Army Radio, Sudanese and Eritrean citizens seeking refuge in Israel are behind much of the crime, although not all of it.

A recent spate of phone thefts targeted sports centers’ lockers in Petah Tikva, Ra’anana and Hod Hasharon.
