President-elect Reuven Rivlin received a welcoming message from Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II on Monday.
“I am sure that the strong relations and close ties of friendship between our two countries will continue during your term of office,” the letter read. “I send you and the Israeli people my blessing for a future of peace and prosperity.”
Rivlin was presented the letter by British Ambassador to Israel Matthew Gould.
On June 10, Rivlin, a veteran MK from the Likud party, emerged victorious from a tight presidential race, beating out his centrist opponent, Hatnua MK Meir Sheetrit, by 63 votes to 53 in a runoff round in the Knesset, marking the end of a tumultuous campaign that saw one candidate withdraw and another decline to run amid scandal.
US President Barack Obama similarly praised Rivlin, indicating the two countries would continue to enjoy strong ties.
