Obama: If Russia were going after IS, jet wouldn’t be shot by Turkey
Add ToI as a Preferred Source on GoogleAsked about the Russian plane being shot down and whether military coordination is still possible, Obama says he plans to speak to Turkish President Erdogan.
“Turkey has a right to defend its territory and its airspace,” he says.
He calls for Moscow and Ankara to get together and prevent an escalation.
Says it points to an ongoing problem, that they are near the Turkish border and going after rebels supported by Turkey. Says if Russia were only going after Islamic State and not moderate rebels, this wouldn’t happen.
“Russia is welcome to be part of this broad-base coalition that is being set up,” Obama says. “The challenge has been Russia’s focus on propping up Assad rather than fighting ISIL.”
