Police say they questioned a young woman on suspicion of ramming into an elderly man during massive Haredi anti-draft protests yesterday.
The driver, a 22-year-old from the Arab town of Qalansawe, immediately turned herself in to law enforcement after the incident, which occurred at Geha Junction near Bnei Brak.
She was released on restrictive conditions and taken for medical treatment following the interrogation, police say.
According to a Channel 12 News report yesterday, the woman claimed to have accelerated her car in a panic after Haredi protesters mobbed and threw stones at her car while cursing her.
She is suspected of assault causing injury, violating a number of traffic regulations and causing a public disturbance, police say.
Yesterday afternoon, thousands of Haredi protesters brought traffic in central Israel to a standstill for over two hours.
The demonstrations, which shut down Routes 1, 4 and 6, were organized in opposition to police’s transfer of more than a dozen draft evaders to IDF custody amid intensifying protest against ultra-Orthodox conscription.
