A woman was killed and up to 19 people were injured when a fire broke out overnight Saturday in an apartment building in the central Israel town of Ramle.
The woman apparently died after jumping out of a fourth-story window to escape the blaze, according to initial reports. She was declared dead after being rushed to Assaf Harofeh Hospital in Rishon Letzion.
A man was also rushed to the hospital in serious condition from smoke inhalation, and an 8-month old baby and several others were among those suffering moderate to light injuries.
Several injured people were also taken to Kaplan Hospital in Rehovot. Most of the injuries were from smoke inhalation, an official from the Magen David Adom rescue service said.
The fire broke out in a fourth story apartment on David Raziel Street in the city. Initial reports said it started in the building’s electrical closet.
