Gilad Shalit to officially complete his army service Wednesday

Defense Ministry will oversee his rehabilitation as a civilian

IDF Staff-Sergeant Gilad Shalit will officially complete his compulsory army service Wednesday. The Defense Ministry will be in charge of the soldier’s ongoing rehabilitation, after he was held in captivity for more than five years in the Gaza Strip.

Shalit underwent surgery to remove shrapnel from his hand after his release by Hamas. He sustained the injuries during the 2006 cross-border raid during which he was kidnapped and smuggled to Gaza. Shalit did not receive humanitarian visits from the International Red Cross during his captivity.

Walla News reported that IDF personnel went to Shalit’s home Tuesday to have him sign a number of documents to formalize the discharge.

Shalit was made a non-commissioned officer after being freed in October of 2011. Israel released 1,027 Palestinian prisoners as part of that prisoner exchange deal.
