Mamdani wins rare praise from ADL for increasing budget of NYC hate crimes office

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wins rare praise from the Anti-Defamation League for announcing an increase in the budget for the Office to Prevent Hate Crimes.
Mamdani and the ADL have often been at odds during Mamdani’s campaign for mayor and since he took office at the start of the year. Mamdani is a longtime critic of Israel, while ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt has said anti-Zionism is antisemitism.
Mamdani said yesterday he would increase the budget for the Office to Prevent Hate Crimes to $26 million for the fiscal year 2027, part of his announced $124.7 billion executive budget.
The figure represents an increase of more than 800% for the office, the mayor’s office has said.
“We welcome Mayor Mamdani’s proposed 866% increase in funding for the Office to Prevent Hate Crimes and look forward to more concrete proposals to keep the Jewish community and all New Yorkers safe,” the ADL says.
Details about how the funds will be disbursed have not yet been finalized.
Jews are targeted in hate crimes in the city more than all other groups combined, according to NYPD data.
