Man collapses, dies during driving test in southern Israel; tester tried to save him
Examiner says he administered CPR to 59-year-old while they waited for ambulance: ‘I did everything I could, but unfortunately I couldn’t save him’
A 59-year-old man died Wednesday after collapsing during a driving test in the southern city of Sderot.
The man, Moshe Hajbi, was required to renew his driving license after recent involvement in a car accident, Channel 13 news said.
But tragedy struck only minutes into the test, when the examiner noticed that Hajbi was causing the car to zigzag on the road, and he quickly realized the man was suffering a cardiac event.
Immediately pulling the vehicle over, the examiner called emergency services who gave him instructions on providing Hajbi with initial medical treatment while they waited for an ambulance.
“I did everything I could, but unfortunately I couldn’t save him,” the instructor said.
Paramedics provide treatment when they arrived on the scene, then took Hajbi to Barzilai Medical Center, where his death was pronounced.
Hajbi’s daughter, Yarden Hajbi Hayun, described the family’s sadness after her father’s sudden death.
“We didn’t understand what exactly happened, how it happened,” she told the Walla news site on Thursday. “We really are in shock.”
She described her father as “a strong, resilient man” who “enjoyed hiking and loved nature,” adding: “He really was a strong person, which is why we were all so shocked.”
