Police arrest six at Tel Aviv anti-migrant protests

Police arrested six people at an anti migrant protest in South Tel Aviv Wednesday night, as dozens protested against African migrants in their neighborhood. Five were arrested on suspicion of disturbing the peace and one on suspicion of incitement to violence against migrants.

Israel Radio reported that there was a large police presence at the protests, which took place at several locations and included a counter demonstrations by human rights activists calling to put an end to incitement against foreigners.

An Israeli citizen of Ethiopian origin was harrassed by protesters after he was mistakenly identified as an illegal migrant.

The demonstrations came one week after hundreds of people rallied in South Tel Aviv demanding a government response to the influx of illegal immigrants. Police arrested 12 people at last week’s protest.
