At least nine people killed, 27 wounded in Russian attack on Kyiv, local officials say

Russian strikes on Ukraine’s capital overnight killed at least nine people and wounded 27 others, including four children, local officials say, hours after Kyiv’s mayor warned of a ballistic missile attack.

Ukraine’s state emergency service says the Russian attack struck five regions of Kyiv.

“Explosions in the city. Kyiv is under ballistic missile attack. Stay in shelters!” Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko wrote earlier on Telegram.

AFP journalists report hearing more than 10 explosions in a row, triggering car alarms on the streets.

In Kyiv’s Darnytsky district, the attacks damaged multiple buildings and vehicles, with authorities reporting seven people killed and 14 wounded in the area. Two people were killed and eight others wounded in Solomiansky district, where strikes damaged a five-story residential building.

Both Russia and Ukraine have ramped up attacks in recent months, with Moscow increasing its long-range strikes on towns and cities across Ukraine. The United Nations found June was the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since April 2022.
