A man arrested yesterday on suspicion of making threats against the life of Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara will remain in detention for an extra day, police announce.
The suspect allegedly sent a letter yesterday to former chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef requesting permission according to Jewish law to kill the attorney general, who is a largely unpopular figure among Israel’s right-wing and ultra-Orthodox populations.
Yosef told the director general of the Religious Affairs Ministry, Yehuda Avidan, about the letter, who in turn reported it to police.
Police arrested the suspect hours later and brought him this morning to the Jerusalem Magistrate’s Court. “At the end of the hearing, the court granted the police’s request and ordered his detention extended by another day, until August 22,” law enforcement officials say.
