Police discovered a man chained up in a southern Bedouin village on Thursday for the second time in less than a week.
Responding to a call from a social worker on a follow up to a patient under her care in Hura, police found a man chained to a post in a shed in a bad state of neglect.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident and the man’s brother was detained and brought for questioning.
Social services said that it appeared that the man had been there for a long time, Channel 2 news reported. His family claimed that the 34-year-old was mentally ill and violent, so they kept him chained up.
He was taken to Soroka Medical Center in a state of exhaustion but in stable condition.
On Tuesday, police discovered a naked man chained to a wall near the unrecognized Bedouin village of Al-Fura’a in the Negev.
An officer patrolling the area surrounding the Tel Arad archaeological site, just off of Route 80, heard cries from inside one of the buildings. Upon inspection, he found a man tied to a wall with iron chains, police said in a statement.
When he was released, the man told the officer he had been tied up there “for years,” according to the statement.
Mental illness in Israel’s Bedouin communities is widely stigmatized and Arabic-speaking mental health professionals are significantly underrepresented in the Arab sector.
