Israeli envoy says Australia’s Palestine recognition is a meaningless attempt to appease voters

Israeli Ambassador to Australia Amir Maimon criticizes the government in Canberra after Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced he will recognize a Palestinian state next month.

“Internal political considerations prevailed over the understanding that this recognition is meaningless and merely performative,” Maimon tells the Ynet news site in an interview. “It won’t change the reality on the ground.”

He adds that “the war in Gaza is just a pretext” and that “the Australian government doesn’t know how to deal with the scourge of ugly antisemitism, and they are trying to appease their voter base.”
