Police arrest an 88-year-old man for murdering his five-year-old son decades ago, after he confessed yesterday to the killing. The suspect was previously jailed for murdering his wife.
The man is suspected of drowning his son in the sea in Eilat in 1974, law enforcement officials say. The five-year-old’s death was initially thought to be a fatal accident.
The man, who reportedly suffers from a terminal illness, was said to have confessed at the Eilat police station in order to clear his conscience.
The suspect — named by the Kan public broadcaster as Asher Goldstein — reportedly told police that the child suffered from cerebral palsy, and that he killed him out of a sense of mercy.
Goldstein was convicted of killing his wife with an iron bar, two years after he allegedly drowned his son.
Police took the man into custody and will bring him today before the Eilat Magistrate’s Court to extend his detention.

As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
