State prosecutors file charges against a man from Nazareth accused of trying to extort hundreds of thousands of shekels from a shop owner, police announce today.
The defendant, 58-year-old Mohammad Ibn Nimr al-Kasisi, tried to threaten the anonymous complainant into forking over NIS 600,000 worth of protection money if he wanted to avoid damage to his shop.
Over WhatsApp, Kasisi made threats on the business owner’s life and family, telling him he had just one day to pay him.
“You have until tomorrow, I’m telling you, because tomorrow I’ll tear your son’s head from his body,” the defendant said, according to the indictment. He also threatened to throw a grenade into the complainant’s grocery store when it opened the next day.
Police arrested the defendant on August 24 in his home in Nazareth. They are requesting from the Nazareth District Court that he remain in custody until the end of legal proceedings against him.
