Police open probe into death of 4-year-old found in locked car in East Jerusalem

Police are investigating the death of a 4-year-old who was found in a locked car in East Jerusalem.

An initial probe finds that, according to the family, the child was located after being locked in a car for an extended period of time, police say in a statement.

The child was taken to the hospital and declared dead after lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful, police say.

Police say they gathered evidence at the site of the incident and have detained the parents and another relative for questioning.

The government has undertaken efforts in recent years to prevent the deaths of children left in overheated cars during the summer months.
