Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US President Donald Trump about the impending strike on Hamas leaders in Doha some 50 minutes before the attack, Axios reports, citing three Israeli officials “with direct knowledge.”
Seven Israeli officials tell the outlet that the White House knew about the attack before missiles were launched, though Washington claims it was only updated after they were fired.
The Israeli update left Trump enough time to call off the strike, the three officials tell Axios.
“Trump knew about the strike before the missiles were launched. First, there was a discussion on the political level between Netanyahu and Trump, and afterwards through military channels,” says a senior Israeli official. “Trump didn’t say no.”
“If Trump had wanted to stop it, he could have,” says a second official. “In practice, he didn’t.”
Israel went along with the White House version to protect the relationship, says an official, while another adds that “the Americans are putting on a show.”
