UN rights council to hold urgent meeting on Doha strike

The United Nations Human Rights Council says it will host an urgent debate on Tuesday regarding Israel’s “recent military aggression” targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar last week.

The council says it received two official requests for the debate, one from Pakistan on behalf of member states of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the other from Kuwait on behalf of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.

The meeting will mark the council’s 10th urgent debate since its creation in 2006. Israel accuses the body of obsessing over its conduct while ignoring rights violations around the world, including by its members.

Israel launched an airstrike on Hamas leaders meeting in the Qatari capital last week, killing five Hamas members and a Qatari security officer, and sparking widespread condemnation.
