Virginia Tech’s Greenberg tapped to coach Maccabiah basketball team

There will be two tryouts in August — one in New Jersey and another in California

(JTA) — Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg was named the head coach of the US Maccabiah Games men’s basketball team.

Greenberg, 45, will be assembling a squad for the 19th Maccabiah Games in Israel in July 2013.

“This volunteer position is important to me because any time you can represent your country and your faith in the same event, it’s something very special,” Greenberg said in a statement.

Greenberg served as an assistant coach at the Maccabiah Games in 1989 and called that experience “life altering.”

He plans to hold two tryouts in August — one in New Jersey and another in California, according to the Washington Post.

The 2009 US men’s squad coached by then-University of Tennessee coach Bruce Pearl won the gold medal.

Greenberg has coached at Virginia Tech for nine seasons. He previously coached at Long Beach State and South Florida.
