Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met Wednesday with his Syrian counterpart, Walid Moallem in Tehran to discuss the ongoing civil war in Syria as well as other regional issues, Iran’s Tasnim News Agency reported.
Moallem, who arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for talks on matters of “mutual interest” and key regional and international affairs, according to the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA), had earlier held a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, who landed in the Islamic Republic’s capital that same day.
The Syrian foreign minister also met Tuesday with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian.
“Any initiative [to resolve the Syrian crisis] should be implemented in coordination with Syrian authorities,” Moallem said during the meeting, according to Tasnim.
Over 210,060 people have been estimated to have died in the Syrian conflict, which began as an uprising against President Bashar Assad but has morphed into a multi-pronged religious and ethnic civil war.
