The Senate has voted to confirm Deborah E. Lipstadt as the United States Special Envoy for Monitoring and Combating Anti-Semitism, after months of delay.
Lipstadt is confirmed in a voice vote requested by Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff, a Jewish Democrat, a day after the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations voted to send her nomination to the full Senate.
“It is time for the Senate, at long last, to confirm this nominee to fight anti-Semitism around the world, on behalf of the United States,” Ossoff said in a floor speech, noting members of his family who perished in the Holocaust.
“Right now as we speak, the scourge of anti-Semitism is rising again in this country and around the world. If we mean the words ‘never again,’ than at long last, Madam President, let’s confirm Deborah Lipstadt to fight anti-Semitism on behalf of the United States,” he added.
Despite months of hold ups and Republican opposition over her past statements regarding right-wing extremists, no lawmaker objects to Ossoff to quash the voice vote and Lipstadt is confirmed.
