Houthis say they fired missile at Israeli ship in Red Sea; maritime agency says projectile missed

The Iran-backed Houthis say they fired a missile at an Israeli-owned tanker in the Red Sea, days after the prime minister of Yemen’s Houthi government and several other ministers were killed in an IDF strike on the capital Sanaa.

The Iran-backed rebels, who sank two tankers in July, say they targeted the Liberian-flagged Scarlet Ray, claiming a direct hit. The ship is Israeli-owned, according to maritime security company Ambrey.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) says the attack missed its target.

UKMTO, which monitors the region, says the ship’s crew “witnessed a splash in close proximity to their vessel from an unknown projectile and heard a loud bang.

“All crew are safe and the vessel continues on its voyage.”

The Houthis — whose slogan calls for “Death to America, Death to Israel, [and] a Curse on the Jews” — began attacking Israel and maritime traffic in November 2023, a month after the October 7 Hamas massacre in southern Israel.
