Some 21,244 new immigrants have arrived in Israel since the Rosh Hashanah holiday last year, a decline of 34% from 32,140 over the same period a year earlier, the Immigration and Absorption Ministry says.
The main reason for the decline was a 52% drop in immigrants coming from Russia, from 19,407 to 9,282.
According to details provided by the ministry, immigration from the United States declined about 10% to 2,910, while French aliyah rose about 20% to 2,649.
Estimates, including by leading demographers and the aliyah organization Nefesh B’Nefesh, forecast significant rises in immigration from the US and France for the secular year 2025.
Despite the overall drop, Immigration and Absorption Minister Ofir Sofer says the numbers of those who are still coming despite the war “are inspiring.”
“Thousands of Jews chose this year to take a courageous step and uproot their lives from many countries around the world in order to come to Israel precisely now and express trust and solidarity in the country,” he says.
