A senior Iranian official warns the United Kingdom and France that the Strait of Hormuz “is not a theater for the military display of extra-regional powers.”

The warning comes after a joint statement yesterday in which French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer affirmed their “willingness to maintain close cooperation with their partners to uphold global security, freedom of navigation and international law.”

In a post on X, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi says that Tehran is the “responsible power and guarantor of the Strait’s security” and “warns against any military movement in this waterway.”

“The security of Hormuz lies with the coastal states; the crisis-makers will be held accountable for the consequences of their adventurism; this is a serious warning,” Gharibabadi writes.

Yesterday, Macron and Starmer said that “restoring safe transit for ships of all nations through the Strait is a matter of global concern,” and that they were “ready to deploy the wider Multinational Military Mission to support freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.”
