The United States condemned the deadly attacks Thursday in Egypt’s North Sinai province that killed at least 26 people, most of them soldiers, and reiterated its “steadfast” support.

Militants fired a barrage of rockets and set off a car bomb in the region where security forces are battling a raging Islamist insurgency.

State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that the United States “remains steadfast in its support of the Egyptian government’s efforts to combat the threat of terrorism in Egypt as part of our continuing commitment to the strategic partnership between our two countries.

“We express our sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and the government and people of Egypt,” she added in her statement.
