President Isaac Herzog, Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, and Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana are addressing by video today a Belgrade conference held by the Serbian-American Friendship Congress and the Serbian parliament.

The conference — called “Partners in a changing world: Central & Eastern Europe, America, Israel and the new Middle East” — will also feature remote addresses by US Senator Ted Cruz and congressmen Tracey Mann, Robert Aderholt, and Josh Gotheimer.

Serbia has become one of Israel’s closest allies in Europe, though it is not in the European Union or NATO. In April, Serbia’s populist President Aleksandar Vucic announced plans to jointly produce combat drones with Israel, in a bid to strengthen his country’s defenses and bolster exports of weapons and military equipment.

The same month, Sa’ar and Serbian Foreign Minister Marko Đurić announced during a meeting in Jerusalem steps toward a free trade agreement and the launch of a new strategic dialogue.
