Americans are now more sympathetic to Palestinians than Israelis, according to a new Gallup poll, a marked reversal after decades in which US citizens were overwhelmingly more supportive of Israel.

Asked “In the Middle East situation, are your sympathies more with the Israelis or more with the Palestinians?” 36 percent of respondents say Israel, versus 41% more sympathetic to the Palestinians.

A year earlier, 46% of poll respondents had favored Israel while 33% were more sympathetic to the Palestinians.

Among Republicans, Gallup finds that they are 57 percentage points more supportive of Israelis than Palestinians, while Democrats are 48 percentage points more sympathetic to the Palestinians and independents 11 percentage points.

The only age group to favor Israel is Americans over 55, while those between 35-54 and 18-34 support the Palestinians.
