‘Israel must work to increase int’l support’

Outgoing Foreign Ministry director general Nissim Ben Shitrit says Israel has few friends around the world and the government should strive to change this fact.

Speaking at a ceremony marking his departure and welcoming incoming director general Dore Gold, Ben Shitrit says, “We have few friends and supporters around the world. A policy to increase their number must be formulated. There is no left and right in the Foreign Ministry, only patriots ready for any mission.”

Gold, who takes over from Ben Shitrit, served as Israel’s envoy to the UN in the 1990s and was a diplomatic adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
