Netanyahu vows not to give in to ‘populist pressure’ on gas

Addressing the recent finds of gas offshore, Netanyahu says Israel “received a huge gift from nature.”

“This is a land of milk and honey — and gas,” the prime minister quotes a folk song, modifying it. The audience chuckles.

He says he will not surrender to populist pressures regarding how to exploit the natural resource, which is of “huge importance” to the state of Israel.

The prime minister says the guidelines being drafted these days provide the correct balance between rights and giving investors incentive to drill for gas. “The alternative is that both sides will lose out and the gas will remain beneath the waters.”

“I don’t accept that it will happen here,” he says, adding that the draft will be presented in a few days.
