Poll finds majority of Palestinians oppose 3rd intifada

A poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Public Opinion in the past month finds that the majority of respondents oppose a new armed uprising against Israel, but few have faith in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s commitment to a two-state solution.

The survey, conducted by Dr. Nabil Kukali between May 27 and June 15, asked 1,000 Palestinians across the West Bank, Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem a battery of questions.

Asked whether they’d support or oppose the outbreak of a third intifada should peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority fail, 54% opposed, 28.7% voiced support, and 17.2% said they didn’t know. A similar poll conducted in September 2014, after the war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, found that 60% of Palestinian respondents supported a return to armed popular uprising, compared to 41% two months prior.

Concerning Netanyahu’s commitment to a “fair and lasting two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” 1.6% said they were confident; 9.9% said they were somewhat confident; 29.2% answered not so confident; 50% said not confident at all; and 9.3% were undecided.
