Man shot to death in Yafia, in 40th slaying in Arab community this year
Police say two individuals shot inside car in northern Arab town, with man in his 20s declared dead at the scene and another in his 60s lightly wounded
A resident of the northern town of Yafia, near Nazareth, was shot dead in his car on Monday morning, according to police and first responders.
The Magen David Adom ambulance service said it received a call shortly after 5 a.m. about a violent incident in the city. Paramedics who arrived encountered a man in his 20s from Yafia inside a car with no vital signs, and declared him dead at the scene.
A second man, a resident of Nazareth in his 60s, was lightly wounded and brought to Emek Medical Center in nearby Afula for further treatment.
The shooting is believed to be linked to a dispute between criminal elements, according to police.
It was the 40th killing in the Arab community this year, ahead of 2023’s record-setting pace, according to the Abraham Initiatives organization.
Earlier this month, six members of the Arab Israeli community were slain in five separate shooting incidents in just one weekend, including a former city council member from Baqa al-Gharbiya.
Many Arab Israeli community leaders put the blame for soaring violence on the police, who they say have failed to crack down on powerful criminal organizations and largely ignore the violence, which includes family feuds, mafia turf wars and violence against women.
The communities have also suffered from years of neglect by state authorities.
