An 1895 letter from Alfred Dreyfus to the French interior ministry, sent by the Jewish captain from prison one month after he was convicted of treason, will be auctioned in Paris next month.
The letter will be sold by Sothby’s Paris branch, and is expected to fetch between $130,000 and 190,000, AFP reported Wednesday.
The 1894 trial and eventual conviction of Dreyfus for acts of treason was at the center of a tense political drama, which included accusations of anti-Semitism toward the young Jewish officer, and later became known as the Dreyfus affair.
In 1906 Dreyfus was exonerated from all charges, rejoined the army, and was promoted.
