Eight Israeli tourists were jailed overnight by authorities in Peru after being arrested for alleged drug use and archaeological theft.

The Israelis were among young revelers who were partying at an event at an archaeological site at Cusco, TV reports said Tuesday. As many as 60 Israelis were held initially, Israel’s Channel 10 said.

A Peruvian police official said that some of them were suspected of drug use and were allegedly found with marijuana and cocaine in their possession.

It was alleged that some of them had also stolen archaeological artifacts from the site.

The current strike action by Israel’s entire diplomatic corps worldwide was complicating efforts to handle their cases, the TV reports said.
