Bnei Brak man arrested after throwing mug at ‘immodest’ 11-year-old

A 34-year-old ultra-Orthodox man was arrested Sunday for throwing a porcelain mug at an 11-year-old girl in the central, largely ultra-Orthodox town of Bnei Brak the previous day after yelling at her for not being dressed modestly enough.

Eden Levi had been sitting on the grass with several friends when a man burst out of a nearby synagogue and threw a mug in their direction. According to some reports the man had recently exited his home and not a synagogue.

The cup narrowly missed the girls, shattering on the ground next to Eden; but shards pierced her chin, leaving her with a large gash.

Levi’s mother Alin Levi told the Walla news site that the man yelled “shiksa” at the girls before hurling the mug, a derogatory Yiddish term for a non-Jewish woman used to insult women for not dressing or acting modestly enough.

“How did my daughter sin, that she’s a beautiful girl,” Levi asked. “She dresses modestly, doesn’t make problems.”

She told the Haredi10 news site that her daughter did not usually meet with that group of friends on Shabbat.

Eden Levi told Channel 2 that she understood from others that the man often harassed the group on Shabbat.

The girl was treated at a local clinic and a police complaint was lodged against the man.

Police said Sunday they had arrested the suspect.

“Police will do everything in their power to investigate violent acts… and will have zero tolerance toward the attackers,” police said in a statement, according to news site Kikar HaShabat.
