Communications Minister Gilad Erdan announced Sunday that he approved the formation of two new television news channels, one for satellite broadcaster YES and the other for cable company HOT.
If approved in the Knesset’s Finance Committee, the new channels will start broadcasting in 2014 and bring the total number of television channels providing national news to five, the new ones as well as the existing broadcasts on channels 1, 2, and 10.
“HOT and YES are interested, so why not bring new blood and new jobs into the television news market,” Erdan said.
The two companies are reportedly ready to start airing and have invested millions of shekels in establishing their news operations.
According to Hebrew daily Israel Hayom, the companies may be required to broadcast their news programs from Jerusalem.

Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
