The High Court of Justice issued a temporary order Friday allowing the Israeli-Arab radio station Radio al-Shams to continue broadcasting during the Yom Kippur holiday, which fell this year also on the Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.
The order overturned an earlier decision by Israel’s Second Authority for Television and Radio to force the station to cease airing its Arabic-language programming for the 26-hour Jewish holiday.
The favorable decision was given following an appeal by the radio station in cooperation with I’lam, the media center for Arab Palestinians in Israel and Adalah, the legal center for Arab minority rights in Israel.
The court said that a panel of three judges will rule at length on the appeal at a later date.
According to Israel Radio, Minister of Communications Gilad Erdan said he regretted the court’s decision, contending that it harmed the mutual tolerance and respect between Jews and Muslims, and the Jewish character of the State of Israel on the eve of the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.
