An Israeli backpacker has died while on a trek in the Andean mountains in Peru. The exact circumstances of the incident were not yet known.
The Foreign Ministry confirmed his death on Tuesday and said it was working to bring the body back to Israel.
Peruvian media said that the man, 33, was traveling with a group of 15 Jewish backpackers and noted that authorities were working on discovering the cause of death.
The incident occurred while the group was trekking the high mountain lake Laguna 69, a popular trail in the Huascaran National Park, about seven hours from Peru’s capital, Lima.
The area lies at 4,600 meters above sea level and is inaccessible by air.
