Haifa District Court on Monday awarded over NIS 320,000 ($88,000) to an Israeli man who was wrongfully imprisoned for four years before his murder conviction was overturned in September 2011.

The case of Hamad Zeinati was exceptional in terms of the severity of misconduct by the authorities, and the ruling recognizes the injustice committed against Zeinati, Yoav Sapir of the Public Defenders Office said, according to Ynet News.

Zeinati was convicted in 2007, along with two other men, for the murder of Yosef Eli. Appealing the case, Sapir argued that Zeinati’s conviction was based entirely on the testimony of one of the other men convicted in the case, who was wrongly told he’d go free if he testified against Zeinati.
