The death of a two-year-old Bedouin boy whose body was found in a desert well became a murder investigation on Thursday night when police detained the child’s mother for questioning.
Many details of the case were restricted from publication under a gag order.
Earlier in the day the woman, 30, together with family members reported to police that the toddler had wandered off by himself from the family home in the Bedouin town of Hura, northeast of Beersheba.
Large numbers of policemen searched for the boy in the surrounding wilderness of the northern Negev desert, including various pits and cisterns in the area. Along with foot patrols police had deployed air units, mounted officers, dog handlers and trackers to search for the boy.
In the afternoon police discovered his body in a water well near the family home, Israel Radio reported. Rescuers located the body after pumping the water out of the well.

As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
