Suspect in Holocaust survivor’s death under house arrest

A 61-year-old truck driver who ran down a 90-year-old Holocaust survivor in Herzliya on Wednesday was released to house arrest on Thursday, pending possible indictment.

The man was suspected of hitting Josef Rubinstein with his truck and fleeing the scene of the accident. Police arrested the man several hours after the incident on Wednesday morning. The unnamed suspect claimed in his defense that he did not notice striking anything and denied his involvement in the accident.

Witnesses at the scene said Rubinstein was run over by a truck and that the driver immediately fled the scene.

According to police investigators, Rubinstein set out on a routine morning walk with two other women when he was hit by the vehicle.

MDA paramedics who arrived at the scene performed CPR on Rubinstein, but pronounced him dead shortly thereafter.
