Four people are injured in a stabbing and ramming attack outside a synagogue in Manchester in northern England, police say.
Greater Manchester Police say one man was shot on the scene at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue, and that he is believed to have been the attacker.
Police say a member of the public called to report that he witnessed a car being driven toward people outside the synagogue, and that one person had been stabbed.
According to law enforcement, the victims are being treated for wounds as a result of both the stabbing and the vehicle ramming.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham tells the BBC that it was a “serious incident” on Middleton Road in Crumpsall, but that it appears to be over.
North West Ambulance Service declares the scene to be a “major incident.”
The incident occurs on Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement and the holiest day o the Jewish calendar.
Help us report truthfully on social media
As a multimedia journalist, my job is to take the quality, fact-based journalism produced by The Times of Israel newsroom and make it accessible across every platform — from Instagram posts to podcasts to short-form videos.
This is how many, especially young people, consume news these days. But misinformation is rampant on social media. Our team at ToI produces accurate, responsible short-form reporting on Israel and the Jewish world.
If you believe in the importance of factual social media journalism, please consider joining our reader support group, The Times of Israel Community. Your financial support is essential to sustain responsible multimedia reporting.
