Trump: Iran deal will immediately reopen Hormuz; if Oman doesn’t behave, we’ll blow it up

US President Donald Trump is asked whether the MOU under discussion with Iran defers talks on Iran’s enriched uranium to a subsequent negotiation, as has been widely reported.

Trump suggests that the initial agreement will touch on nuclear issues, but declines to elaborate, instead focusing on other issues that the MoU will address.

“One of the things that will happen is the strait will open immediately,” he says, highlighting something that was not even an issue before the war was launched by the US and Israel.

Trump is asked whether he would accept a deal that gives Iran and Oman temporary control over the Strait of Hormuz.

“No, the strait is going to be open to everybody… It’s international waters. Nobody’s going to control it. We’re going to watch over it.”

“Oman will behave just like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow them up. They understand that, and they’ll be fine,” he adds.

He repeats his claim that the US has brought about regime change in Iran, even though the Islamic Republic is still in power. He claims that Iran’s “new leaders” are “much more reasonable” and “smarter” than their predecessors.

“We can make a good deal right now, but maybe not a great deal,” Trump says, insisting that he only wants to sign a great deal.

Asked if he is concerned about rising gas prices, Trump insists that the US has enough oil and that Iran’s closing of the Strait of Hormuz is a bigger problem for the rest of the world than it is for Washington.

He reiterates that his main concern is preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, suggesting that he is willing to put up with the economic fallout in the interim, while insisting that gas prices will quickly come back down when the issue is resolved.

Trump is asked about having Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium transferred to Russia or China — something he has dismissed before. He again says he would not be comfortable with that.

He insists that the US will not grant Iran any sanctions relief until Tehran “behaves properly.”

“When they do what’s right, we’ll let them have their money,” he says, before seeming to contradict himself. “One thing is not contingent on the other.”

Asked to place a timeline on when a deal may be reached, Trump declines to do so, while insisting that talks are going well.
