Police are investigating the death of a 33-year-old man in the northern city of Shfaram, after he was shot and killed while in his truck Thursday morning.

Paramedics found the victim, named by Arab outlets as Nazareth resident Wiam Fakhuri, unconscious and suffering from bullet wounds. They pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said that officers were searching for suspects and had not yet reported any arrests.

Near the scene of the shooting, authorities found a burning car that they suspect was used by Fakhuri’s assailants, Ynet reported.

The shooting comes amid a major wave of violence in Israel’s Arab society, which has continued to grow since 2023.

According to the Abraham Initiatives watchdog, which tracks Arab murder victims, Fakhuri’s death brings this year’s homicide total to 197.

Last weekend, a wave of criminal violence took over the southern city of Rahat, leaving two dead.

Police arrested three suspects in connection with the fatal shooting, which was apparently part of a blood feud that reignited following a brawl between two young men belonging to rival families in the southern Bedouin city.

Police said that the Rahat station commander “held a discussion with city leadership, making a clear and urgent appeal to put an end to the culture of revenge killings and to choose dialogue and reconciliation between the families amid the ongoing bloody conflict.”

Rahat Mayor Talal al-Krenawi had previously blamed the spiking violence on police, claiming they fail to enforce the law in the city and other Arab locales throughout Israel, a sentiment that other Arab leaders have echoed.

Last month, the Abraham Initiatives organization called on National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir to resign over the soaring murder rate plaguing Arab society.

The organization accused the government, specifically Ben Gvir and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, of having “failed miserably in dealing with crime in Arab society.”

“In any civilized country, the person in charge of dealing with such a failed phenomenon would immediately resign,” the organization said.
