Man of the people: President-elect Herzog spotted grabbing groceries

Social media kvells over pictures of incoming head of state doing his Friday morning shopping, though some wonder whether photos of female runner-up would’ve sparked same reaction

Days after being elected Israel’s next president, Isaac Herzog became a social media darling when pictures of him shopping at his local Jerusalem grocery store went viral Friday.

“Wow, even after he was elected, President Isaac Herzog is not released from doing household chores. This morning at the neighborhood supermarket. President of the People… Respect,” tweeted Army Radio journalist Jacob Bardugo.

“The cutest part is the shopping list he has in his hand,” tweeted former Kulanu MK Rachel Azaria.

But not everyone was impressed. Haaretz reporter Hagar Shezaf tweeted, “If Miriam Peretz had been elected president, would you have been this excited about her still shopping at a supermarket?”

Another Twitter user noticed that if you look up Herzog’s home on Google Earth, you will find him standing outside the door waiting for someone to let him inside.

The man of the people image is a twist for Herzog, who is widely viewed as political royalty in Israel, the son of Chaim Herzog, Israel’s 6th president and grandson of the country’s first Ashkenazi chief rabbi after who he was named.

He was also leader of the Labor party and up until his election, chairman of the Jewish Agency.

Herzog will replace President Reuven Rivlin and enter the President’s Residence on June 9.
