Toddler in critical condition after being stung by scorpion in Negev

A baby girl from a Bedouin village in the Negev was in critical condition Sunday after being stung by a yellow scorpion.

The toddler was brought in by her family to a clinic in the southern city of Arad, where an emergency medical team began treating her. She was later evacuated to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, Hadashot TV reported.

“When we arrived, we saw a one-and-a-half-year-old baby with sting marks on her stomach, they told us that she was stung by a yellow scorpion,” MDA paramedic Yarden Madar told Hadashot TV. “She developed a severe reaction and we gave her life-saving medical treatment.”

According to the report, the baby’s condition stabilized after she received treatment at the hospital.

The Israeli yellow scorpion, also commonly known as the death-stalker, is a highly venomous species common in southern Israel.

While its venom is not lethal for adults, it can be deadly for the young, elderly and infirm.

The scorpion is usually drawn out into the open by high temperatures. Israel is home to 21 species of scorpion, five of which are poisonous.
