When comedian Jerry Seinfeld and fellow “Seinfeld” alumnus Jason Alexander were spotted earlier this month outside Tom’s Restaurant in New York – the legendary location of many scenes in the wildly popular 90s sitcom – wearing their characters’ trademark garb, the image was promptly tweeted and the Internet very nearly imploded with speculation of an impending reunion.

On Sunday fans finally discovered what the commotion was all about, when the reunion of sorts aired as a Super Bowl ad for Seinfeld’s web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.” The 90-second spot featured Seinfeld and Alexander, who played George Costanza in the series, assuming their classic roles as they exchanged Super Bowl banter in the famed diner.

The short also featured a welcome cameo by Seinfeld archrival Newman (Wayne Knight), who proved that his glare had lost none of its potency in the intervening years.

The spot was a promo for the series, now in its third season on the website of the online distribution company Crackle. Still, it was a welcome return for the much-beloved characters — a bit blink-and-you’ll-miss-it, but hey, we’ll take what we can get.
