Trump said seeking edits to Iran deal, particularly around fate of uranium stockpile

In his fateful Friday meeting to decide whether to sign the emerging memorandum of understanding with Iran, US President Donald Trump asked for multiple edits to the deal, including regarding the Islamic Republic’s remaining nuclear material and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, Axios reports, citing a senior US administration official and another American source briefed on the matter.
The report says Trump wants a deal and expects it to be finalized soon, with a new back-and-forth expected to take days or longer.
The MoU reportedly currently includes an Iranian promise not to seek a nuclear weapon, but nothing more concrete. It says there will be a 60-day window to negotiate on Iran’s nuclear commitments and how to dispose of a stockpile of highly enriched uranium believed to be buried underground since the US struck three key Iranian nuclear sites in the 12-day Israel-Iran war in June 2025.
Axios cites the administration official as saying Trump wants that part to be updated with more specific details “about how the US gets the material and the timing.”
The second source says edits are also sought regarding the language surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to maritime traffic.
“There will be a deal,” the senior administration official is quoted as saying. “The imminence of it, we’ll see. We’re willing to wait so the president gets what he asks for. It could be a week. It could be less. It could be more. At the turn of the week, we hope to have something.”
The White House doesn’t immediately comment.
