Vice President JD Vance is giving a press conference on the Iran talks.
He says the talks have made good progress and that the Strait of Hormuz is open.
He also says Iran has agreed to have IAEA nuclear inspectors return.
“The Iranians have agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into their country,” Vance says, calling this “the first step to permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran.”
Vance says he expects the inspectors to arrive in Iran “at the minimum this week,” and that US officials could be in touch with them “as soon as today,” though he notes no arrangements have been finalized.
IAEA inspectors had been operating in Iran under the 2015 nuclear agreement reached by the Obama administration and abandoned by US President Donald Trump. Following last June’s US and Israeli strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, Tehran barred inspectors from accessing them.
Vance also says the foundations have been laid for a successful final deal.
